From Sheffield there are two sensible ways to Scarborough, and the choice is between speed and simplicity. Changing twice, at Doncaster and York, takes about 1h 50m. Northern’s direct train takes about 2h 45m but asks nothing of you once you have sat down.
The quicker route starts with a TransPennine Express or Northern train to Doncaster, 26 minutes. An LNER train then covers Doncaster to York in 20 minutes, and TransPennine Express finishes the trip in 49 minutes from York. Across the two changes the waiting added up to only about a quarter of an hour on the weekday timetable we checked.
That tight fit is what makes the route fast, and it is also its weak point: a late train into Doncaster or York leaves little slack before the next connection. Departures ran about hourly from 05:42 to 20:11, two of them before six and most of the rest at eleven minutes past.
Northern’s direct train goes all the way without a change. It calls at 14 stops and takes around 2h 44m, so it is roughly 55 minutes slower, but there is nothing to miss. It left Sheffield at 05:42 and then hourly at about 57 minutes past, from 06:55 to 17:57, and it is the one to use if you would rather not juggle three trains and two connections.
Other combinations turned up, changing at Leeds or York alone, at around 2h 30m to 2h 40m, plus a slower one via Huddersfield. A late 21:32 with a single change at York took about 2h 30m and is the latest departure we saw.
By road the trip is 90 miles on the M18 and A614 and takes about two hours, roughly between the two rail options.
At Scarborough, Newborough in the centre is an eleven-minute walk from the station, a distance of some 820 metres.
