Middlesbrough to Scarborough by Train

By Scarborough Guide editors · Updated 22 October 2026

Middlesbrough to Scarborough by train means changing at York. TransPennine Express or LNER runs Middlesbrough to York in a little over an hour, and a TransPennine train takes 49 minutes from York to Scarborough. On the move that is under two hours; the problem is the time spent between them.

The wait at York

On the weekday timetable we checked, a typical journey on this one-change route took about 2h 45m, which means close to an hour standing around at York. The best connection came in at just under two hours, with only about five minutes to change. So the same route can be either quick or tedious depending on the departure, and it is worth checking the total time of the one you choose rather than assuming.

Departures ran about hourly from 06:17 to 21:18, mostly at 14 minutes past the hour.

Changing at Darlington as well

A second pattern added a change at Darlington, leaving Middlesbrough at 05:50 and 06:36 and then at about 52 or 53 minutes past each hour from 07:53 to 21:52, and took around 2h 8m. On typical times, a 14-minutes-past departure that waits at York and the next Darlington departure some 40 minutes later reach Scarborough within a few minutes of each other. In other words, you can spend the extra time in Middlesbrough rather than on a platform at York, at the cost of one more change. Some of the same slots were also served by a version changing at Eaglescliffe and York, in the same 2h 8m.

The car makes a strong case here. The A171 route is 49 miles and takes about 1h 20m, well under any of the rail options, so if you have one, drive.

Arriving by train, the walk from Scarborough station to Newborough in the centre is about 820 metres, or eleven minutes.
