Hull to Scarborough by Train

By Scarborough Guide editors · Updated 22 October 2026

Northern runs direct trains from Hull Paragon to Scarborough. The journey takes 80 minutes, 76 on the quickest run, and there is no change to make. Every other routing that appeared, through York or Leeds, took longer, so for most of the day this is the only train worth considering.

Twenty-one minutes past, until early evening

The weekday timetable we checked had 15 direct departures from Hull Paragon. The first three were at 05:30, 06:39 and 07:24; from 08:21 onwards every train left at 21 minutes past the hour, finishing with the 19:21.

That 19:21 is the one to watch, because it was the latest direct train found. Leaving Hull after work, you have the 18:21 and the 19:21 to choose from, and if a day in Hull runs later than that, the options get slower quickly.

After the 19:21

Later journeys go via York. Trains with a change there ran about hourly through the day, the latest found leaving Hull at 20:51, and took around 2h 15m, nearly an hour more than the direct train. A 20:15 changing at Leeds took about three hours and offers nothing the York route does not.

During the day there is no reason to use either of them: the direct train is quicker and runs just as often. They matter only once the 19:21 has gone.

Driving takes about the same time as the train. The road route by the B1249 is 45 miles and around 1h 20m, so the choice between them is more about whether you want a car in Scarborough than about speed.

Scarborough station is around eleven minutes’ walk from Newborough, about 820 metres, so the town centre is a short stroll once you are off the train.
